Driveway pavers in Carson CA - a driveway built to stay flat and easy to fix

Cracked concrete or a sunken spot by the garage? We set pavers on a base built for how your lot drains.

Should my driveway be pavers instead of concrete?

Driveway pavers in Carson are concrete pavers laid on sand over a packed rock base and held in by edging. That gives you a driveway we can open up in one spot and put back when something underneath needs work.

Most people call me about this when their concrete driveway has cracked through, or a corner by the garage has dropped and holds water. Pavers are one answer, not the only one, and I'll tell you if your slab can wait. The price moves with how big the driveway is, how much old concrete we break out and haul away, how deep the base has to be for your drainage, and which paver and pattern you pick. The schedule mostly turns on the tear-out, the weather and whether any of the work reaches the street. When I come out, I walk the driveway with you and put what I'd do in writing, so you have a number for your own driveway.

How we build a paver driveway

We build the base to suit how your lot drains, because that's what keeps a paver driveway flat. Before we dig, we have the underground lines marked so nobody hits a pipe or a wire. Then we break out the old driveway, dig down past the soft stuff and pack the soil. The base goes in next, crushed rock we compact in layers and slope so water runs off instead of sitting under the pavers. Edging goes along the sides to hold it all in, then a thin bed of sand we drag dead level, then the pavers. We finish by sweeping sand into the joints and running the compactor over the top so the pavers lock together.

A driveway usually touches other work. If your lot slopes and the dirt along one side needs holding back, that's retaining wall construction, and it's better done before the pavers go in. If the brick steps or front planter next to the driveway have cracked or lost mortar, masonry restoration on those can happen while we're already there.

  • Standard interlocking pavers

This suits most driveways, a solid concrete paver set tight on sand with joints that lock the surface together. It comes in plenty of colors and patterns, and it's what I'd point most people to unless water is a real problem on the lot.

  • Permeable pavers

These let rainwater pass through the surface into the base instead of running off, and they're used on driveways as well as walkways. They're generally not used where groundwater sits within 2 feet of the bottom of the pavement, so whether they fit depends on what's under your lot.

Driveway pavers in Carson: the street and the permit

Most driveways meet the street at an apron, and that's where the city comes in. The City of Carson requires an encroachment permit for any work in the public right-of-way, the city's side of the property line, but the work it lists is things like lane closures, utility vault access and temporary parking, not driveway pavers. That list doesn't settle whether your driveway needs a permit, so don't take it as a no. For work on the lot itself, Carson's Building & Safety Division issues residential building permits and handles the inspections, and that's the office to ask. I check this for your address before we start, so the permit question is answered before anything gets broken out.

A lot of the driveways we look at here are older poured concrete, cracked across the middle, lifted by a tree or sunk near the garage where a downspout empties. We look at where that water goes before we price anything, because a new driveway on the same drainage ends up with the same low spot. We see the same kinds of driveways on jobs in Torrance and Long Beach.

Why call us for driveway pavers

  • I write your estimate myself

I come out to look at your driveway and write the estimate, and our own crew does the work while I run the job on site. The person who looked at your drainage is the one making sure the base gets built for it.

  • In business since 2017

I started this business in 2017 to work on houses people already live in, and most of our calls are about something cracked or sinking. So I'll tell you straight if your concrete driveway can wait, instead of selling you a new one.

  • Licensed and fully insured on site

We're licensed and fully insured. That matters on a driveway job, with a breaker, a compactor and a dump truck working a few feet from your house.

  • We sort out city or county

Some addresses around Carson fall under the county instead of a city, and we work out which office handles yours. Applying to the wrong one just wastes your time, so we settle it before we schedule.

The base is the part you'll never see, so ask about it. Send your address, about how big the driveway is and where water collects through our contact page, or call (424) 286-2220.

Paver driveway questions from Carson homeowners

Why choose pavers over a concrete driveway in Carson?

Pavers crack less, because the joints between them help cut down the cracking you usually see on poured concrete and asphalt. If your slab is only cracked on the surface and isn't moving, it may not need replacing yet, and I'll say so when I see it.

How long does a new paver driveway take before I can park on it?

You can drive on it as soon as it's installed. Pavers don't have to cure the way poured concrete does, so once the joints are filled and the surface is compacted, your driveway is back in use. We'll talk through the schedule for your job when I come out.

Can pavers be fixed if the ground under my driveway sinks?

Yes. We pull up the pavers over the low spot, rebuild the base underneath and set the same pavers back, with no jackhammers. The same goes when someone needs to dig down to a utility line, and nothing gets broken out and hauled to the landfill.

Who handles permits for driveway work near the street in Carson?

The city's Engineering Services approves right-of-way work that isn't on its encroachment permit list, and new encroachment applications go through the city's online Civic Access portal. If your driveway job needs a permit, we pull it and set up the inspections.

How much does a paver driveway cost in Carson?

There's no set price, because it comes from your driveway, and I give it to you in writing after I've seen it. Beyond size and tear-out, a pattern with lots of cut pavers or curved edges takes more labor, a thicker or permeable paver costs more, and extra base for drainage adds rock and digging. Straight runs and a standard paver keep it lower.

How do I compare quotes for a paver driveway in Carson?

Ask each contractor how deep the base will be and how they judged your soil and drainage, because quotes can differ there. Traffic, soil, drainage, moisture and climate set the base thickness, and a driveway needs a thicker base than a patio even on well-drained soil. Trade guidance recommends 2 3/8 inch pavers for home driveways, so check the thickness too. Placing paving falls under California's C-12 earthwork and paving license class.
