What is brick pointing, and does my wall need it?

Brick pointing in Carson means cutting the worn mortar out of your brick joints and packing in fresh mortar. It's one of the best ways to stop water from getting into a brick wall.

Bad news first. Mortar that's crumbling or cracked won't heal, and every rain pushes a little more water into the wall behind it. The good news is that the brick itself is usually fine, and if some bricks are cracked or flaking at the face, that's brick repair, which we do too. The price depends on how many square feet need work, how deep the joints have worn, how high the wall goes and whether something else is letting water in that has to be fixed first. The schedule depends on the same things, plus how easy the wall is to reach. When I come out, I'll put what I'd do in writing so you have a number for your own wall.

How we do brick pointing on your house

I start by finding where the water is coming from, because new joints won't last if a gutter or a bad cap keeps soaking the same spot. Then we cut the worn mortar out of the joints down to sound material, clean them out and pack in new mortar in layers so it bonds all the way back. We mix that mortar softer than the old, not harder, since a stronger mortar can chip the face off the brick, and that damage is permanent. We also match its color so the new joints blend in instead of looking like a patch, shape them to match the rest of the wall and clean the brick before we leave. Repointing is its own skill, separate from laying brick, and I'm glad to show you photos of our work before you decide.

Sometimes the joints are pointing to a bigger problem. Cracks that climb a wall in a stair-step pattern can mean the house is moving, and that's a foundation repair question before it's a mortar one. Chimneys wear fastest at the top, and if the crown, the concrete cap on top, or the flashing, the metal seal where the chimney meets the roof, is letting water in, we take care of it as chimney repair along with the joints.

  • Chimney repointing

Chimneys take more sun and rain than any other brick on the house, so their joints usually go first, starting near the top. This is the one for you if you're finding mortar sand on the roof or in the firebox, and it usually means ladder or roof work that adds to the job.

  • Walls, planters and house fronts

Garden walls, planters and brick fronts usually wear low, where splashing rain and downspouts hit them. This is the one for you if the damage is near the ground and easy to reach, which usually keeps the work simpler.

Brick pointing in Carson: permits and what we see

Carson's Building & Safety Division handles permits and inspections in the city. Its online portal, Carson Civic Access, takes new permit applications, plan checks and inspection requests. Whether your repointing job needs a permit is for the city to decide, so ask them. If you already have a permit and a question about it, city staff answer email at building@carsonca.gov when you include the permit number and the address. If your job needs a permit, we pull it and set up the inspections. Some addresses fall under the county instead of a city, and we'll work out which office handles yours.

Most of the pointing we do here is on chimneys, low garden walls, planters and the brick fronts of older houses, where years of sun and sprinkler water have worn the joints back. We're based in Carson and see the same wear on jobs in Torrance and Long Beach. If you're not sure we cover your address, call and ask.

Why call us for brick pointing

  • I write your estimate myself

I come out myself to look at your brick and write the estimate, and our own crew does the work while I run the job on site. The person who told you what the wall needs is the one making sure it gets done that way.

  • Repair work since 2017

I learned the trade on new tract homes and started this business in 2017 to work on houses people actually live in. Old mortar with a history is our everyday work, and repointing is one of the jobs we're best known for.

  • Licensed and fully insured

We're licensed and fully insured. California's Contractors State License Board sets out a masonry class for contractors who lay brick and build walls with or without mortar, so it's fair to ask any crew about their license before work starts.

On a pointing job, the mortar mix decides whether your brick comes through in good shape, so let me see the wall before anyone picks one. Call us or send the form and we'll set up a time.

Brick pointing questions from Carson homeowners

How do I tell if the brick on my house needs repointing?

Your brick needs repointing when the mortar is crumbling, has gaps or hairline cracks, has cracks between the brick and the mortar, or has worn back more than ¼ inch from the face. If you catch it at that stage, you can plan the work before more water gets into the wall. Send me photos or have me look, and if it can wait, I'll tell you.

How much does brick pointing cost in Carson, CA?

Professional brick repointing across the US usually costs about $400 to $2,500 per 100 square feet of wall. That's a national figure, not our price. Your cost in Carson depends on how much wall needs work, how high it is and how far the old mortar has gone, and I'll put it in writing after I see the job.

How long does new mortar last on a brick house?

Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, depending on how exposed the wall is and what mortar was used. Brick can last more than 100 years, so it's normal for a house to need its joints redone while the brick is still sound.

Should I repoint the whole wall or just the joints that look bad?

It's usually best to repoint the whole affected area, not just the joints that look bad. It's hard to tell which joints are letting water in, so the usual advice is to redo every joint in that section. When I walk the wall, I'll show you where I'd stop and why.

What is the best way to remove old mortar from brick joints?

Guidance written for historic buildings says that hand chisels and mash hammers are slower but usually the safest choice and give the best result. Power saws and grinders are more common, and in unskilled hands they can ruin brick, soft brick most of all. On older brick, ask any crew how they plan to cut your joints out before they start.

Is repointing a brick house loud, and will there be scaffolding?

Yes, it's usually noisy, and on taller walls you may have scaffolding up for some time. Guidance written for historic buildings describes repointing as precise, slow and noisy work. When I look at your job, I'll tell you what access we'd need and where it would go.
